The world seemed a totally different place and she just couldn’t see it any other way. Now that she knew…….”At eight years old Anna was struggling to understand the death of her favourite playmate, her Granddad. Still not understanding why he had to go and still angry at the unfairness of it all, until something magical happened and she found herself transported to a place which made her realise that death was not necessarily the end and that Granddad was well and happy in a new land.Anna’s unhappiness is replaced by comfort and joy as she is shown a different way of seeing the loss of her Granddad and given a new understanding of life.

She begins to understand that Granddad’s body was hurting him and that now he is much better and happier in this new place. Even his cat is there, all young and sleek again. On her visit to this place, Anna also sees a little boy she had known who had been very disabled. He died not long ago. Here, Anna finds him well and happy, able to play at last. This story gently guides the reader to look at a possible life after death, in a warm and non-threatening way that can help in coming to terms with what appears to be an incomprehensible idea that somebody you have loved has left your life forever.A beautiful story for children and adults alike- and one which is extremely helpful in calming the pain of loss.

This is a story written in a way we can relate to when we suffer the death of someone close.Anna’s Story gives children (and adults) an alternative idea to ‘they’ve gone up to heaven’, a cliché so well-worn that it has lost most of its impact. With this different approach, children can read Anna’s story to themselves if they choose and talk about their feelings to the adults in their lives.Anna’s experience is so lovely, that it helps to ease the fear of this subject and leaves the way open for us all to express our own beliefs with others.Debra Paradise
